General
Who can install Nurajacks?
Anyone! Nurajacks for timber decks are not considered restricted work. Any DIY-er or tradesman should be able to install.
How accurate is the Quantity Calculator?
The calculations produced by the Quantity Calculator are based on averages and should be viewed as an estimation only.
Where are Nurajacks and Nuraspikes made?
Nurajacks are designed and manufactured in Italy.
The Nuraspike is designed in New Zealand and manufactured in Vietnam.
Can I install tiles on Nurajacks?
In Australia, Nurajacks are only available with joist heads for timber or composite decks.
Nurajacks can support aluminium frame systems available in Australia which may have tile systems associated.
Do I need a building consent?
The Nuraspike and Nurajack system is designed for low-profile decks less that one metre off the ground, which typically do not need a building consent.
However, the structure of the deck should be constructed as per local regulated requirements.
If a low-profile deck is constructed 'stand alone' away from a building, it is considered a landscape feature and is usually outside the Building Code.
Please consult with your local governmental authority for more information.
Are the Nuraspike or Nurajack systems Branz Approved?
Nurajacks are part of the Nuralite Membrane Deck Branz and Codemark Appraisal.
As yet the Nuraspikes do not have an appraisal.
Membrane Deck
How many Nurajacks will I need?
This depends on the dimensions of the deck area - please use the QUANTITY CALCULATOR.
Do Nurajacks have to go over a membrane?
No, Nurajacks can be installed over any stable, non-eroding surface. If installing over grass or dirt, use a Nuraspike.
What ground conditions are suitable for Nuraspikes/Nurajacks? When are Nuraspikes required?
Nurajacks can be installed over any stable, non-eroding surface.
Nuraspikes are used when installing over grass or dirt, where stability or erosion could be a factor.
Nuraspikes should not be used if there is a layer of rock within 500mm of the topsoil.
If there is a layer of rock, remove the soil and place the Nurajacks on top of the rock base.
How much weight can a Nurajack withstand?
Nurajacks have been load tested up to 1000kg.
How do I measure the slope across the ground that I want to install Nurajacks on?
A laser level is the easiest way.
Another technique would be to use a straight edge, making it level and measuring the distance under the straight edge where you expect your Nurajack to be (remembering to deduct the buildup of the deck).
Are Nurajacks affixed to the membrane by screws or glue?
NO!!! Nurajacks simply rest on the membrane. Gravity and the surrounding walls/parapets/balustrades hold the deck in place.
What type of joist or bearer can I put on the Nurajack?
Any timber, aluminium or composite bearer can be installed on a Nurajack.
Make sure the bearer is suitable for the loads to be applied. Aluminium joists can span greater distances than timber or composite joists.
What are holes in the bottom of the Nurajack base for?
They are a legacy from an older system and serve no other purpose.
Do I need to put a slip layer between the membrane and the Nurajack?
Check the specification to see if a slip or separation layer is required for your particular project.
The self-levelling head of the Nurajack ensures the Nurajack is fully supported over the membrane.
An offcut of the membrane used on the project can often act as a slip layer.
Will the Nurajack void the membrane warranty?
Most membrane suppliers provide a Materials Defects Warranty so their warranty does not cover any damage caused by other products or items impacting on their membrane.
Nurajacks are compatible with all sheet membranes (e.g. Butyl, TPO, Bitumen etc.) and are installed without penetration of or adhesion to the membrane.
Nuraspike
Does the Nuraspike work in all soils?
No, the Nuraspike will not work in waterlogged or excessively rocky soils.
We recommend that you test the soil by driving a Nuraspike in first before committing to purchase all the Nuraspikes needed for a project.
How many Nuraspikes will I need?
This is dependent on the design of your deck.
Nuraspikes are a decking pile replacement - so wherever a pile should go is typically where a Nuraspike should go.
Please see the Quantity Calculator to help design your deck and the placement of the Nuraspikes/Nurajacks.
How much weight can a Nuraspike withstand?
Much depends on the ground that the Nuraspike is installed into. We have tested the Nuraspike in grass and dirt to 500kgs each and observed zero movement over a 3-month period.
Can I use the Nuraspike and Nurajack directly under a joist or do I have to use a bearer?
This is dependant on the design of your deck.
Nuraspikes and Nurajacks can be placed directly under a joist or bearer.
Nuraspikes are a decking pile replacement - so wherever a pile should go is where a Nuraspike should go.
Please see the Quantity Calculator for more information.
Do the Nurajacks need to be affixed to the Nuraspike?
No, the Nurajack just sits on the Nuraspike.
This allows for any movement (expansion or contraction) of the deck.
If the deck will be subjected to lateral forces, affix the deck to the house foundation or utilise a locating pile.
Do I have to use a Nurajack on top of a Nuraspike or can I just use a timber pile on top of a Nuraspike?
Nurajacks are the secret to the Nuraspike.
The Nurajacks have a self-levelling head and can be placed anywhere on top of the Nuraspike.
This means the Nuraspike can generally be lined up with the other Nuraspikes along a joist or bearer line. The Nurajack will affix to the joist or bearer and sit on the Nuraspike.
Will the Nuraspike rust in the ground?
Yes, however, the Nuraspike is made from Galvanised Steel which has been powder coated and will continue to give adequate support of the Nurajack deck for more than 20 years.
In very acidic soils - such as in volcanic locations - traditional pile construction should be considered.
Can the Nurajack deck be cross braced?
No, Nurajacks cannot be cross braced, limiting decks to less than 1000mm in height.
Where bracing is required, use either brace or anchor piles.
What if the ground I'm building on has a slope?
Some gradient of slope is acceptable.
You may have to remove the grass so the top of the Nuraspike is flush to the dirt.
However, the deck will not be able to extend more than 1000mm off the ground at its highest point.
How does the Nuraspike compare in price to a traditional pile?
Consider the cost of the products, the time costs required for a traditional piles, the delay of the project while the concrete cures and the clearing away of removed soil.
The Nuraspike is considerably cheaper, cleaner and more efficient than a traditional pile.
Can I put a spa pool or a shed on the Nuraspike and Nurajack deck?
Each Nurajack can withstand a load up to 1000kg.
Check that the soil is stable enough for the loading of the spa pool or shed. Consider the need to restrain the shed in the event of a seismic event or wind loading.
