Understanding the Nuraspike System
1. What is a Nuraspike?
A Nuraspike is a 500mm-long, powder-coated galvanised steel footing designed to support Nurajack pedestals for low-profile decks over grass or dirt.
2. What makes the Nuraspike ideal for low-profile decking?
It enables construction of low-height decks without traditional footings, making it perfect for areas with limited clearance or uneven terrain.
3. Can I build a deck over grass or dirt using Nuraspikes?
Yes. Nuraspikes are specifically designed for building decks over natural ground surfaces like grass or dirt, making them ideal for backyard and DIY decking projects.
Installation and Compatibility
4. How do I install a Nuraspike?
Drive the Nuraspike into the ground using a sledgehammer until flush. No concrete, power tools or specialist equipment required.
5. Do I need to dig holes or pour concrete to install Nuraspikes?
No! This is the beauty and simplicity of the Nuraspike system. Nuraspikes are a no-dig solution. They are driven directly into the ground with a sledgehammer—no digging or concrete required.
6. What tools do I need to install Nuraspikes?
Once assembled, you’ll only need a sledgehammer and a level. No power tools or concrete required—perfect for easy deck installation.
7. Can I install Nuraspikes myself or do I need a professional?
Nuraspikes are DIY-friendly and can be installed by homeowners or builders without specialist training, making them ideal for weekend projects.
8. How do Nuraspikes work with Nurajacks?
Once flush with the ground, a Nurajack pedestal is placed directly on top of the Nuraspike. The self-levelling head of the Nurajack adjusts to uneven surfaces, creating a stable and adjustable deck support system.
9. Do I need to level the Nuraspikes before placing Nurajacks?
No. Thanks to the self-levelling head of the Nurajack, precise alignment of the Nuraspike is not necessary.
10. What size Nurajack or Nurapad can be used with a Nuraspike?
Nurajacks and Nurapads range from 10mm to 550mm in height can be used with Nuraspikes, allowing flexibility in deck height.
11. How much weight can a Nuraspike withstand?
The load capacity of a Nuraspike depends on the type of ground it is installed into. In our testing, Nuraspikes installed in grass and dirt successfully supported up to 500kg each, with zero movement observed over a 3-month period.
12. How much weight can a Nurajack withstand?
Nurajacks have been load tested up to 1000kg.
Deck Types and Materials
13. Do I need to affix a Nurajack to a Nuraspike?
No. Nurajacks do not need to be affixed to the Nuraspike as the weight of the deck holds everything in place. If the deck is very small and lightweight or seismic protection is needed, attach the deck to an adjacent structure or use galvanised brackets.
14. Can Nuraspikes and Nurajacks be used with both timber and aluminium-framed decks?
Yes. The Nuraspike and Nurajack system is compatible with both timber and aluminium-framed decking, offering a durable and adjustable foundation.
15. Is the Nuraspike system suitable for tiled decks?
Yes, but tiled decks require an aluminium frame or Nuragrid system installed over the Nuraspikes and Nurajacks.
16. Can I use Nuraspikes for elevated decks?
Nuraspikes are best suited for low-profile decks. For elevated decks, consult with a builder or engineer to determine appropriate support systems.
17. Can I put a spa pool or a shed on the Nuraspike and Nurajack deck?
Yes. Each Nurajack can support up to 1000kg, making it suitable for spa pools or sheds. Ensure the soil is stable enough to handle the load, and consider anchoring the shed to account for wind or seismic activity.
Environmental Suitability
18. What soil types are suitable for Nuraspike installation?
Nuraspikes work well in most soil types but are not recommended for waterlogged, heavily compacted or rocky ground.
19. Do Nuraspikes work in coastal or high-moisture environments?
Yes. Their powder-coated and galvanised finish makes them corrosion-resistant and suitable for coastal, damp or high-moisture areas.
20. Will the Nuraspike rust in the ground?
Yes, rusting is possible over time. However, the Nuraspike is made from galvanised steel and finished with a durable powder coating, which provides long-term protection against corrosion.
21. What if the ground I'm building on has a slope?
A slight slope is acceptable. You may need to remove grass or surface material so the Nuraspike sits flush with the ground. However, the deck must not extend more than 1000mm above ground level at its highest point to ensure stability.
Flexibility and Reuse
22. Are Nuraspikes reusable or permanent?
Nuraspikes are designed for permanent installation but can be removed and reused depending on soil conditions and project needs.
23. How many Nuraspikes do I need for my deck?
Spacing depends on your deck design and framing. Typically, one Nuraspike is placed under each Nurajack, which supports joists or bearers. Nuraspikes are a decking pile replacement—so wherever a pile should go is generally where a Nuraspike should go. Check out the online Quantity Calculator to help design your deck and the placement of the Nuraspikes and Nurajacks.
24. Can I use the Nuraspike and Nurajack directly under a joist or do I have to use a bearer?
This is dependent on the design of your deck. Nuraspikes and Nurajacks can be placed directly under a joist or bearer. Nuraspikes are a decking pile replacement—so wherever a pile should go is where a Nuraspike should go. Please see the online Quantity Calculator for more information.
Compliance and Support
25. Where can I buy Nuraspikes?
In New Zealand, Nuraspikes are available through Nurajack stocking timber merchants. In Australia, please order online at Products – Nurajack.
26. How does the Nuraspike compare in price to a traditional pile?
The Nuraspike is significantly more cost-effective than traditional pile construction. It reduces material costs, labour time and project delays—especially those caused by concrete curing and soil removal. Overall, Nuraspikes offer a cheaper, cleaner and more efficient solution for decking support.
